Of all the tattooed people I met in the last year, Graham is the
one who reminded me most of Ray Bradbury’s The
Illustrated Man, not only because his body was nearly
completely covered with tattoos but also because of the
amount of pain he was willing to undertake in his pursuit of
‘a customised body’.
His back, arms and part of his legs were covered with
likenesses of characters from Star Wars, one leg had an
image of Beetlejuice on the back and, on the day I
photographed him, his wife’s picture was being added to this
select company. The first session lasted for two-and-a-half
hours and, at the end of that time, a large area of his body
was bruised and he was literally in shock.
