Kane’s left leg is encircled with highly coloured Iron Maiden inspired images and his right leg is a riot of jungle animals – a giraffe, an elephant, a chimpanzee among others – inked in browns, beiges and blacks. His left arm is completely covered in pictures of skulls and other macabre artefacts while, anachronistically, his right arm is covered with a design of flowers in brilliant shades of yellow, red and green. Kane was 22 years old when I photographed him and, when he first expressed an interest in having tattoos, his father, Marc, tried to dissuadehim. When Kane wouldn’t be deterred, Marc – a tattoo artist – bowed to the inevitable and did the job himself. |
